our rehoming process
My Grandfather’s Cat works to help seniors and terminally ill people arrange second forever homes for their pets, with the owners having the ultimate decision of who adopts their animal.
Before the Application
The goal of our Rehoming Service is to keep the animal with their human up until the very last day possible, so the adoptables stay in their homes during our rehoming process. While this is always our goal, there are some cases where the adoptable has already lost their human and is being temporarily cared for by a loved one.
Our Rehoming Process
Submit an Application
If you are in need of our Rehoming Service, you can submit an application via this link. This application should be submitted by the owner, family or a loved one.
Email Reply
Once your application has been reviewed, you will receive an email from our team confirming we have reviewed your email and added you to our waitlist.
Waitlist
Due to the high-demand for our Rehoming Service, all applications are added to our waitlist except for MAID adoptions, which we prioritize. It is typically a 2-3 week wait from the time an application is submitted until the time we contact you to begin the rehoming process.
Intake Call
When you are next on the waitlist, you will receive an email from our team to schedule a call to see if we are able to help. On the call, we will learn more about the situation and determine if we have capacity to help you find a second forever home.
We will also request the adoptables vet records. We can help you obtain a copy of these from your vet. If the adoptable hasn’t seen a vet recently, we can work with you to arrange a vet check and are happy to cover the costs.
Meet your Adoption Coordinator
Then, we will begin the adoption process! You will be connected with one of our dedicated volunteer Adoption Coordinators. Each Adoption Coordinator only works with one adoptable at a time, so they will be dedicated to rehoming your beloved pet.
Building the Profile
Your Adoption Coordinator will schedule a call with you to get to know you and to write the adoptables profile. They will ask you many questions to gather information to ensure the profile is detailed and showcases the adoptables personality.
Photos
Your Adoption Coordinator will request a few photos from you for the adoptables profile. Any cute photos of the adoptable looking at the camera will work!
Adoptable Profile
You will receive an email from your Adoption Coordinator with a copy of the adoptables profile that they have written. You can review it, edit it and make any changes you’d like. We want you to be comfortable with how we are presenting your beloved pet. Once you approve the profile, we will post the adoptable on our website, social and email list.
Applicants
When someone is interested in the adoptable, they will email the Adoption Coordinator. They will review each email and schedule interviews with those they believe are a good fit.
Phone Interview with Applicant
The Adoption Coordinator will provide you with a list of the applicants they believe it is a good fit. You will review each applicant and determine which you’d like to move forward with. Then, you can chat with the family over the phone to determine if they are a good fit.
Meet-and-Greet
Before you choose an adopter, we recommend doing a meet-and greet. You can meet the adopter in person, see how the adoptable interacts with them and learn more about each other. Sometimes, in adoptions that involve dementia or a scaredy cat, a meet-and-greet may not be ideal, so it is ultimately your decision if you do a meet-and-greet.
Choose an Adopter
Once you choose an applicant to adopt your beloved pet, the adoption is an arrangement is between yourself and the adopter, meaning you’ll work together you will then work together to arrange transportation and pick-up. You can also send along anything that belongs to the adopter to the new family, such as a cat bed, cat tree and their favourite toys.
The Adoption Coordinator will send along the vet records and our Adoption Guide to the adopter, ensuring they have all the information they need to welcome the adoptable into their home and care for them. They will also let the other applicants know that the adoptable has found their second forever home.
Stay in touch!
Often families to stay in touch with the adoptees to see how the adoptables are doing. This provides comfort to all involved that the adoptable is thriving in their second forever home.
