our adoption process

My Grandfather’s Cat works to help seniors and terminally ill people arrange second forever homes for their pets, with the owners having the ultimate decision of who adopts their animal.

Our goal is to keep the animal with their human up until the very last day possible, so the adoptables are still in their homes. While this is always our goal, there are some cases where the adoptable has already lost their human and is being temporarily cared for by a loved one.

Our Adoption Process

  1. Apply

Keep an eye on our website, social and email list for adoptables available near you! When there is an adoptable you are interested in, simply email the volunteer Adoption Coordinator facilitating the adoption with your contact info and a little about yourself. They will set up a time for a phone interview.

  2. MGC Interview

During your interview with the Adoption Coordinator, you will learn more about the adoptable and we will ask questions to get to know you. We will disclose all known health information about the adoptable, their personality and their quirks. If the Adoption Coordinator determines you and the adoptable are a good fit for each other, we will pass your information along to the adoptable’s owner or family.

  3. Owner Interview

You will then be interviewed by the owner or family of the adoptable so they can get to know you and the other applicants. They will carefully consider each applicant. If they decide to move forward with your application, they will set up a meet-and-greet.

  4. Meet-and-Greet

You will take time to get to know the adoptable and the family. You can ask them any additional questions you may have and learn about the adoptable, such as the type of food they eat, their personality, daily routine and lifestyle.

  5. Adoption

If the family chooses you to adopt their beloved pet, they (or sometimes the Adoption Coordinator!) will let you know. The Adoption Coordinator will provide you with all the adoptables vet records and our adoption guide to help navigate the process of bringing the adoptable home and care for them. As our adoptions are agreements between the owner and the adoptee, you will then work together to arrange transportation and pick-up.

  6. Stay in touch!

Often families to stay in touch with the adoptees to see how the adoptables are doing. This provides comfort to all involved that the adoptable is thriving in their second forever home.
