Akira
For a family in Ontario, the last couple years have been filled with heartbreak. Shortly after the premature birth of her daughter, a young mom tragically lost her husband when he didn’t survive heart surgery. Just as she was working through her grief and raising her children as a single mom, she found out her young son relapsed with childhood cancer.
With the utmost amount of strength, she moved her family closer to SickKids Hospital in Toronto for her son to receive treatment. She was advised that after the treatment her son won’t be able to be around pet dander. So, in the midst of an already heartbreaking time, the family had to rehome their beloved 19-year-old cat, Akira.
The mom contacted My Grandfather’s Cat to help find a second forever home for Akira. As Akira was our oldest adoptable to date, we were unsure how long it would take, but we were determined to find her a second forever home she deserved and to help this family. As soon as Akira’s post went on social, a lady named Guylaine saw it and immediately sent an email to our Adoption Coordinator, Melanie.
After speaking to both Melanie and the family, it was clear Guylaine was the perfect fit. Just 10 days later, Akira moved in with Guylaine. On the second night, Akira crawled into bed with Guylaine and curled up under the comforter — she knew she was home.
“I’m so glad and feel so lucky to be her new mom. Akira is so sweet! After just couple hours, I could pet and brush her , and she gladly jumped in my bed to tuck in until this morning, her motor fully on! She’s absolutely adorable.”
Now, three weeks later, Akira continues to thrive with Guylaine. She loves to snuggle, curl up in the blankets and purr when she is being brushed. They are already the best of friends, keeping the family updated so they know Akira is thriving. Most importantly, the mom’s strength and Guylaine’s kindness are give hope to everyone that there is a second forever home for every cat, no matter their age.
