Freddy
When a senior with autism in Toronto was looking for a cat for companionship, he asked his friends and neighbours if there was a rescue they recommended. A neighbour said she knew of another senior who had passed and the family was looking for a home for her cat, Freddy, so he decided to adopt him.
After a few months, the senior realized Freddy was an incredibly affectionate cat who constantly wanted pets and snuggles. For most, this is a dream, but for a senior with autism, it was a struggle to give Freddy the affection he needed. He made the difficult decision to find him a home where he could get the attention he deserves. With the support of Freddy’s late owner’s family, he contacted My Grandfather’s Cat.
He began working with our volunteer, Courtney, to find Freddy a second forever home. As soon as his profile was posted, the applications rolled in. Courtney interviewed each applicant, and presented the ideal candidates to the senior. He interviewed each one, and chose another senior, Earl, to be Freddy’s second forever family.
“The process was incredibly thoughtful; they screened excellent potential adopters and gave me the opportunity to speak with each one and make the final decision myself.”
That week, Freddy moved in with Earl, who absolutely adores Freddy’s affectionate personality and need for love and attention. They have already become the very best of friends.
"In a large, expensive city where it can be so difficult to find resources for those on a fixed income, My Grandfather’s Cat was a true godsend. They helped me re-home my senior cat with a wonderful senior gentleman who had recently moved to be near his supportive family. It is rare to find an organization with such genuine heart and integrity—I am so grateful for their help."
